Capital of the District of Santarém, located in the province of Ribatejo and integrated into the Regional Tourism Entity Alentejo and Ribatejo .
The inhabitants of Santarém are called "Escalabitanos" or "Santarenos".
On March 15, 1147, D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, took the city by surprise from the Moors, in a night climb.
The Tagus River and the fertile plain of Lezíria, which surround the Santarém plateau, determined the settlement of the place since ancient times.
Currently in Santarém d stand the Temples built between the 13th and 15th centuries, which give it the epithet of “ Capital of the Portuguese Gothic ”.
